A self-described democratic socialist just won the Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, D.C. — putting a hard-left candidate on track to run the nation’s capital, right in President Trump’s backyard.
Story Snapshot
- Janeese Lewis George won the D.C. Democratic mayoral primary with about 53% of the vote, defeating pro-business candidate Kenyan McDuffie, who got 36%.
- Lewis George openly calls herself a democratic socialist and ran on universal childcare, expanded rent control, 72,000 new housing units, and cutting ties between D.C. police and federal immigration agencies.
- Because D.C. votes overwhelmingly Democratic, winning the primary is nearly the same as winning the mayor’s office in November.
- President Trump threatened to “reclaim” Washington if a democratic socialist won — setting up a likely clash between a far-left D.C. mayor and the Trump administration.
A Hard-Left Win in the Nation’s Capital
Janeese Lewis George, a 38-year-old D.C. Council member from Ward 4, won the Democratic mayoral primary on June 16, 2026. Official results from the D.C. Board of Elections showed her capturing about 52.9% of the vote. [8] Her opponent, Kenyan McDuffie — widely seen as the pro-business candidate — received 36.4% and conceded the next morning. [3] This was D.C.’s first open mayoral race in 20 years, after Mayor Muriel Bowser chose not to seek a fourth term.
Lewis George is the first self-described democratic socialist to serve on the D.C. Council since 1998. [13] She beat six other Democrats to earn the nomination. In an overwhelmingly Democratic city, the Democratic nominee is almost always the next mayor. The general election is set for November 3, meaning Lewis George is now on track to become the first democratic socialist mayor in Washington, D.C.’s history.
What She Wants to Do With Power
Lewis George’s platform goes well beyond standard Democratic talking points. She wants to build 72,000 new housing units in five years and expand rent control across the city. [16] She also wants universal childcare for every D.C. family, lower utility costs through expanded solar energy, and an end to D.C. police cooperation with federal immigration agencies. [11] Critics warned that her plan to tax income earned in D.C. by Maryland and Virginia residents could push law firms and lobbyists out of the city.
Her campaign knocked on more than 200,000 doors and pulled in endorsements from over 29 labor unions, the Sierra Club, Jews United for Justice, and the Working Families Party. [3] She drew comparisons to New York City’s socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and her rise fits a broader pattern of democratic socialists winning big-city Democratic primaries across the country. [14] Whether those campaign promises can survive contact with D.C.’s budget realities — and federal oversight — remains to be seen.
Trump’s Threat and a Coming Clash
Before the primary, President Trump threatened to “reclaim” Washington, D.C. if voters elected a democratic socialist mayor. [15] That threat now sets the stage for a direct confrontation between the Trump administration and a mayor who has promised to fight federal interference in court. Lewis George called Trump’s comments “an attack on democracy.” Unlike a state governor, D.C.’s mayor has no buffer between city hall and the federal government — Congress and the White House hold real power over D.C.’s budget and laws.

For conservatives, this result is a clear warning sign. A self-described socialist is about to run the city that houses Congress, the Supreme Court, and the White House. She has pledged to cut police ties with federal immigration enforcement, expand government-run childcare, and confront the Trump administration head-on. Washington, D.C. has long leaned left, but this marks a sharp move further in that direction — and the fallout will play out just steps from the halls of power.
