Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez should not be underestimated. She may talk like a girl from a California sitcom and chirp on social media 24/7 but she is a shrewd political strategist and power player.
That doesn’t mean what she does is smart.
Let me explain: AOC understands the direction her party is going, and she wants to take advantage of that to boost her power and her party’s power – even if what she does is obviously ridiculous.
The latest example is her plan to “deprogram” white supremacists with a well-funded new government initiative.
AOC: the White Supremacist World ‘Will Never Exist’
Speaking recently at a virtual town hall, AOC said that conspiracy theory believers and White supremacists need to be “deprogrammed” by the government.
AOC sits on the House subcommittee on civil rights and said she knows of “programs” to “deradicalize” people who have gone too far into conspiracy theories or become racist. Government programs to make sure you don’t think things that are bad: what could go wrong?
“The White supremacist cause is futile, it’s nihilist. Their world will never exist. That’s why we’re seeing violence right now,” AOC said, adding “we have to pick up those pieces.”
Hold on a second: isn’t the whole thing from AOC and Antifa and progressives the claim that America supposedly is White supremacist right now?
Isn’t their entire argument that the White supremacist worldview is what currently has power? But it will “never exist” also? Sounds like a bit of a mixed message.
But if it lets you throw more mountains of debt notes and self-righteous TV interviews at people in order to boost your profile and the Democrats’ power then why not? Are you beginning to see how AOC can be smart by doing things that are stupid?

‘It’s Going to Take a Very Long Time to De-Radicalize These People’
AOC said that funding wasn’t up to par during the Trump years and it’s going to take a lot more money and effort to really change hearts and minds.
“It’s going to take a very long time to de-radicalize these people and a lot of effort. This is a problem that doesn’t go away on Jan. 20,” AOC said, adding that lots of far right people and racists live in a “bubble” of misinformation and twisted beliefs that needs to be interrupted and changed for them to begin to see things differently.
Interestingly, AOC may not realize that many progressives also live in a bubble of misinformation that would be helped a lot by some gentle deprogramming.
“We need to double, triple or quadruple the funding for these programs,” AOC said of the deprogramming treatments, adding that it should be applied to everyone from conspiracy theories to neo-Nazis and White Supremacists whose beliefs could lead them to commit violence such as what happened recently at the Capitol.
AOC has said she felt her life was in danger during the storming of the Capitol and gave the example of Trump’s belief that the election was stolen from him as an unhinged conspiracy theory.
Is AOC Right?
There’s no doubt that extreme views can lead to extreme actions. However pressuring people into government reeducation requirements to fix their wrongthink would likely cause them to get further radicalized if anything.
AOC and the Democrats should start with jobs and improving the lives of Americans before trying to comb through everything and find the bad guys. President-elect Joe Biden’s promise to bring back Made in America and Buy American as well as add millions of jobs is a good start.
The only problem? Leading economists say that Biden’s push to raise the minimum wage nationally to $15 an hour will actually cause at least 1.3 million lost jobs.
